Ookla Net Speed Test: A Comprehensive Analysis

The Ookla net speed test is a widely used tool for measuring internet speed and performance. However, its accuracy has been called into question due to various factors, including the noise of MIMO-MFSK systems and partial real CSI replacement. In this article, we will explore the limitations of the Ookla net speed test and compare it with other speed tests like NDT7.

MIMO-MFSK systems are known for their high spatial multiplexing gain in independent channel fading statistics. However, they also suffer from noise and require precise channel estimation and synchronization. In contrast, noncoherent MIMO systems are less affected by phase fluctuations and have fewer requirements for channel estimation and synchronization.

Recent studies have shown that Ookla's Speedtest is prone to high variability in NDT7 test results and systematically under-performing servers in the Ookla network. To address this issue, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of Ookla's performance using more than 80,000 pairs of Ookla and NDT7 measurements across nine months and 126 households.

Our findings suggest that Ookla and NDT7 report similar speeds under most conditions, except for networks with high latency, where Ookla consistently reports higher throughput. We also found that the test design plays a crucial role in determining the results of speed tests, with factors such as TCP congestion control, native vs. non-native usage modes, and network conditions all contributing to differences between Ookla and NDT7.

In this paper, we present the first-ever comparative evaluation of Ookla and NDT7, both in controlled and wide-area settings. Our goal is to characterize when and to what extent these two speed tests yield different results, as well as the factors that contribute to the differences.

In conclusion, while Ookla's net speed test is a widely used tool for measuring internet speed and performance, its limitations must be considered when interpreting results. By comparing Ookla with other speed tests like NDT7, we can gain a better understanding of the factors that affect internet speed and performance, ultimately helping to improve network quality and reliability.
